Cheesy Potato Farls

Image of heart-shaped farl, cooked

I was planning to make potato farls anyway, because my vegetarian friend Pippa is pining for her Irish roots, hoho.

Then I saw a tweet from @fromhomage warning that the deadline was approaching for February’s Cheese! Please challenge, featuring cheesy romance.

And I have to say the two things have come together rather brilliantly. I know that because I just ate the outcome. So with no more ado, here’s my recipe …

Cheesy Potato Farls

  • Servings: makes four farls
  • Print

Ingredients:

250g cooked mashed potato

30g plain flour

A knob of butter

50g grated Cheddar cheese

Method:

Roll out the mix and cut into four

Melt the butter and mix with the mashed potatoes. Fold in the flour, mixing well. Add the cheese and mix again.

Turn onto a lightly floured surface and knead briefly until smooth.

Roll out into a circle with the diameter of a dinner plate and about 0.5cm/1/4″ thick.

Normally you divide the farls into four at this point.

If you’re a romantic sap like me, or happen to be entering a Valentine-themed challenge, cut them into hearts.

Put a little oil into a frying pan and fry the farls for 3-4 minutes each side until golden.

Serve with a fried or poached egg on top. Lunch – sorted.

If you want to make plain farls, just skip the cheese. They’re traditionally eaten with a whopping great big fried breakfast.

  1. Mmmm, fried cheesy potato, yum. Although ‘farls’ made me think of ‘phal’ which I’m not sure would work half as well… The heart shapes are inspired too! Thanks for sharing with Cheese, Please! this month 🙂

  3. This is fantastic – yes, fattening, but so worth it… In fact, I’m so tempted that I’m going to make these today. I’m a bit late for lunch so will make it for supper. I might even attempt heart shapes! Would love to post the pictures here but may have difficulty doing so.. Thank you for the delicious recipe, as ever!
